GANNETS | SÙLAIREAN

GANNETS | SÙLAIREAN

The gannet hits the water at speed, fearless, piercing the veil between worlds above and below. Its dive propels it into another realm, of danger, of survival, of necessity, a realm from which it returns.

To survive, the gannet must hunt. It must take its chance in all the seas it encounters, just as we must take our opportunities in life. And if we miss one opportunity, we must be ready to seize the next one. With its power, resilience, tenacity, with its all-seeing eye, the gannet journeys far each year, but returns, always, to its nest, paired for life with its mate.

In Homer’s Odyssey, the shipwrecked hero was rescued by the sea goddess Leucothea – creative, energetic, harmonious, changing – who came to him as a gannet, giving him her veil in which to wrap himself, bringing him safely to land.

We can always plunge into a different world of opportunity, bringing us close to the shores of what we seek: love, hope, wisdom, meaning, belonging, beginning …

Tha an sùlaire a’ bualadh air a’ mhuir aig astar, gun eagal, a’ sàthadh uachdar na mara, agus a’ siubhal eadar dà shaoghal. Thig e air ais bhon t-saoghal shìos – làn chunnartan is làn chothroman – dhan t-saoghal gu h-àrd.

Feumaidh an sùlaire sealg. Feumaidh sinne an dearbh rud a dhèanamh san dòigh againn fhèin, a’ cur grèim air na cothroman a thig nar rathad. Ma chailleas sinn fear dhiubh, feumaidh sinn a bhith deiseil airson an ath fhear a ghlacadh. Is neartmhor, seasmhach is a tha e, le sùil uile-lèirsinneach, bidh an sùlaire ag astarachadh gach bliadhna, ach tillidh e, an còmhnaidh, dhan aon nead, is dhan aon chèile.

B’ i Leucothea, ban-dia na fairge – cruthachail, cleasach, caoibhneil, caochlach is a bha i – a thàinig dhan ghaisgeach fhèin ann an riochd sùlaire ann an laoidh Odusseus. Thug i bhèile dha na chòmhdach, agus thàinig e slàn sàbhailte gu tìr às dèidh trì làithean. Dh’fhaodadh an sùlaire a bhith na threòraiche dhuinn san t-saoghal nàdarra, no os-nàdarra.

Thèid againn air saoghal ùr fhosgladh dhuinn fhèin, gar toirt nas fhaisge air na tha sinn a’ sireadh: gaol, dòchas, eòlas, ciall, buntainneas, tòiseachadh …
